  1. Preparation for legislative visits on immigration reform with House targets National Domestic Workers Alliance, summer 2013

  2. Where we are in the legislative process • On June 27, s. 744 passed out of the Senate with a vote of 68 to 32. • Now the House will do one of these things: a) decide to vote on s. 744, b) introduce their own bipartisan bill, c) continue introducing piecemeal bills, d) do nothing. • For immigration reform to pass this year, we need a bill that includes a path to citizenship to pass out of the House. • Then it would go to Conference Committee to be reconciled with the Senate Bill. • Then would be signed by the President.

  3. What we’re fighting for • A roadmap to citizenship that recognizes the contributions of women in the workplace, at home, as caregivers and as stewards of our communities. • Strengthen the family immigration system and eliminate the backlogs in the current system that have kept families separated for too long. • Recognize women’s work in the allocation of future work visas, and provide protections for all women workers on the job.

  4. What we’re fighting for • Ensure protections for survivors of violence and trafficking. • Protect due process and the rights of parents, and prevent deportations and detentions that separate families. • Promote immigrant integration that includes and empowers women. • Provisions of the POWER Act to protect immigrant workers from retaliation, and to protect the rights of ALL workers on the job. • AND These priorities cannot come at the expense of more enforcement of our borders! We should be investing in our families and communities instead.

  5. Our targets Category 1: Women of the House Our ask: Speak out publicly about our issues. Work as part of a cohort with other women in the House. Help us create a vehicle for our priorities. Category 2: Potential champions who are men Our ask: As a man who is supportive of women’s issues, make a public statement about how immigration reform is essential for women’s equality.

  6. Our targets Category 3: Swings Our ask: Understand how immigration reform is central to women’s equality. Understand that women in your district care about these issues. Help bring a bill that includes a roadmap to citizenship to the floor, and then vote yes. Category 4: Gang of 7 and House Leadership Our ask: Make sure that our priorities are included in any bill that comes to a vote on the floor.

  7. The stories our targets need to hear • Workplace abuse and inability to speak out because of immigration status • Domestic workers who have no paystubs to document their labor • Families that live in fear of separation, or who have had a family member detained or deported • Families who have been separated by the family visa backlog • Trafficking and domestic violence survivors who have had to remain silent because of immigration status • AND…the tremendous contributions and leadership of domestic workers to the economy and culture of this country, and to our communities

  8. Outline of a Legislative Visit • Introductions • Introduce NDWA • Thank the Congressperson, if they are Category 1 or 2 • Present our policy priorities • Share 2-3 personal stories that CLEARLY illustrate our priorities • Make our request, and wait for an answer! • Questions and answers • Thank yous, and leave materials • Afterwards, share notes from your visit with Lisa, lisa@domesticworkers.org.

  9. Preparing for legislative visits • Review our policy priorities together. • Introductions and each person has 1 minute to share how their personal story illustrates one of our policy priorities for immigration reform. • Make sure everyone knows which targets we’re visiting and what category they fall into. • Review the outline of a visit, and decide who will speak. • Do a full run-through of a visit to practice! • Get your materials together. Make sure you have enough packets for all your visits (NDWA’s policy priorities, and domestic worker stories on the need for immigration reform)
