  1. Networking Technologies Presentation Presented by David Fisher June 4, 1999 West Lafayette, IN

  2. What is a network? • A group of computers and other devices that communicate together and share resources (i.e. file storage space and printing services).

  3. What devices can I find on a network? • Printers • Modems • Fax machines • Cameras • Robots • Computers

  4. Terms • Mbps - MegaBits per second • Nic - Network interface card • IP - Internet Protocol • TCP/IP - Transmission Control Protocol Internet Protocol • Protocol - set of rules for communication for network devices.

  5. What kind of Networks exist? • WAN - Wide Area Network. Exists between buildings, states, countries. • LAN - Local Area Network. Normally thought of as within a building. • MAN - Metropolitan Area Networks

  6. Are all networks the same? • Ethernet - Most popular. 10 Mbps. • Fast Ethernet - 100 Mbps • AppleTalk - 2 Mbps. Not routed at Purdue. • Token Ring - 4 - 16 Mbps. Passes a token. • ARCnet - 2.5 Mbps (20 - 100 for ARCnet Plus). It too passes token. • FDDI - Fiber Distributed Data Interface - Backbone Stuff

  7. Are there other differences? • Server-based networks - client/server • Monolithic vs. Distributed • Provides centralized administration • Push/Pull installations • Software metering • Standardized security

  8. Peer-Peer Networks • Loosely organized group of computers (workgroups). • No centralized administration • No big server costs

  9. Are there still other differences? • Topologies - Star, Bus, Ring • Wires/Lack of Wires • Protocols (IP, IPX, NetBEUI)

  10. Thanks to: James Griffoen http://www.dcs.uky.edu/~griff/ Topologies - Star Advantages Less expensive More reliable Disadvantages Takes more cable

  11. Thanks to: James Griffoen http://www.dcs.uky.edu/~griff/ : Topologies - Ring Advantages Equal access - token passing Disadvantages One break takes everyone down

  12. David Fisher: Thanks to: James Griffoen http://www.dcs.uky.edu/~griff/ Topologies - Bus Advantage Relatively inexpensive Disadvantage One break takes everyone down

  13. Media Types • UTP - Unshielded twisted pair • STP - Shielded twisted pair • Coaxial (thick and thin) • Fiber Optic • Infrared • Radio • Microwave

  14. Common Protocols • TCP/IP - Unique IP needed • SLIP/PPP - dial up access • IPX/SPX - Novell • NetBEUI - Microsoft • AppleTalk • DLC (Data Link Control) - HP Jetdirect

  15. Connectivity Devices • Repeater - connect network segments • Hub - connects nodes (star) • Switch - smart hub • Bridge - filters/moves data between segments (MAC address) • Router - filters/moves data between segments (logical address)

  16. Is there a better way to look at this? • Yes …. It’s called the Open Systems Interconnect (OSI) Model.

  17. Thanks to: www.osilab.ch OSI Model

  18. OSI Model (further) • Physical - cables or other media • Data Link - data broken into frames, linked to MAC address • Network - Adds extra headers to frame, translates between MAC and network address • Transport - Assembles packets, checks for errors

  19. Session - Maintains session between nodes • Presentation - Translates data • Application - Controls access by apps

  20. Application - Boogie Presentation unknown Session - unknown Transport - proprietary Network - proprietary DataLink - unknown Physical - IR Network Device?

  21. Advantages Runs on AA batteries IR connection Limited self-correcting behavior Disadvantages Limited battery life Proprietary interface Irritating interface Can’t feed after midnight Evaluating the Furbish Network

  22. Interactive Session 1 • Look at the configuration of your own machine. • What protocols are you running? • What clients are you running? • What kind of network interface card do you have? • What’s your IP address?

  23. Interactive Session 2 • Exactly how hard is it to install nics? • Wanna try to install memory also … it’s not exactly networking, but two hours is a lot to fill and the case is already open …...

  24. How does networking lend itself to Restaurants, Hotels, etc? • Shared Databases • Database can be shared and updated with a number of people. OS or NOS provide security and reliability. • Web interfaces will revolutionize e-commerce. (BIG plug … data-mining is the future).
