  2. Kazaa, Brilliant and Altnet • Kazaa is a peer to peer sharing system • They've partnered with Brilliant (3d advertising) • Infrastructure in place to download new components • Plans are afoot to download and enable components that will create "altnet" in "several weeks"

  3. Altnet • Will allow brilliant to charge commercial customers to use "spare" computing resources • Brilliant will provide "compensation" to those who allow them to resell their spare cycles • “Win-win", or is it?

  5. Issues • Sneaky? Privacy? • Security - bugs, subvert, DDOS attacks • Whose computers? • Transit bandwidth - whose network? • Commercial use, etc.

  6. What to do about it? • Uninstall: http://zdnet.com.com/2100-11-875278.html • Block tcp/1214 • Watch bandwidth, charge/yell at/beat people who use too much • Traffic shaping (ala packeteer)
