  2. Please write down the following words: Figurative Language Idiom Metaphor Simile Imagery Exaggeration Free-Verse Allusion Alliteration Lyric Poem Personification Onomatopoeia

  3. Figurative Language All the tools that a poet uses to create a special effect or feeling.

  4. Idiom A common phrase made up of words that cannot be understood by their literal meaning. “It’s raining cats and dogs.”

  5. Metaphor Comparison between two unlike things; not using the words like or as. “Time is money.”

  6. Simile Comparison between two unlike things; using the words like or as. “The building is as tall as a mountain.”

  7. Imagery Language that uses or appeals to the five senses.

  8. Exaggeration Obvious stretching of the truth “I died of exhaustion.”

  9. Free-Verse • Poetry written without regular rhyme scheme, meter, or form

  10. Allusion • Reference to something with which the reader is likely to be familiar

  11. Alliteration • Repetition of the same consonant sound at the beginnings of several words. “Peter Piper Picked A Peck Of Pickled Peppers.”

  12. Lyric Poem • A short, musical poem that expresses the poet’s thoughts and emotions.

  13. Personification • Giving human-like characteristics or qualities to non-human things

  14. Onomatopoeia • The formation of a word by the imitation of a sound
