  21. Forming Civilizations • A civilization is a complex culture with these five characteristics: • Specialized workers • Technology • Advanced cities • Institutions • Record keeping

  22. Institution • A group/structure dedicated to a single purpose, OR a long-lasting pattern of order and cooperation in society • Does not have to be a place • Does not have to be a “thing”

  24. Farming Needs • Civilization requires agriculture • Allows or creates STAIR • Agriculture requires fertile land (good for farming) and water • Count on rain and Slash and Burn Farming • Or use river water for irrigation
