  2. CHILDLINE MALAYSIA • Childline Malaysia, an NGO initiated the establishment of 15999 Childlinewith the Government • Launched in November 2010 • Within the last 2 years, more than 9,000 calls for information, support and help have been received

  3. CHILDLINE MALAYSIA • The services to children are a shared responsibility between the government and Childline Malaysia and other volunteer organisations that forms the child protection system • Infrastructure and operations of the helpline are funded and supported by the government • ChildlineM’sia main role is education,outreach, promotion to children and publicand establishing partner networks for interventions, care and rehabilitaiton

  5. Abuse and Violence • 4.892 cases of child abuse • 25% of abusers were mothers • 18% were fathers /step fathers • 20% were teens’ partners • Girl victims were twice as many as boys • Bullying in schools is a major concern

  6. CHILD TRAFFICKING & SALE OF BABIES • Malaysia is distinctive for representing all three points in the chain: a source, destination and transit country for human trafficking.

  7. REFUGEE, STATELESS & MIGRANT CHILDREN STREET CHILDREN 30,000 stateless children particularly in E Malaysia 20,000 refugee children from (Myanmar, Afghanistan, Cambodia)

TEEN PREGNANCY / UNDERAGE MARRIAGE / HIV/AIDS /MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES • In 2011,health clinics reported 18,000 teen pregnancies. • Ministry of Health reported that 20% of 11.4 million children in Malaysia have some form of mental health problems • Increase in HIV /AIDS -largest increase in 15 -25 years

  9. So, tell me…so many BIG Issues….What can we do ?

LAUNCH AND PROMOTION 2010 -2011 • Engagement with Government - Setting up the infrastructure for helpline • Engagement with NGO partners working with vulnerable and marginalised children (children in shelters, indigenous and rural poor children, urban poor communities, street children ) • Awareness and Promotion of number to marginalized children, schools and public • Development of collaterals –PSAs, posters, button badges, info cards

FOCUS FOR 2012- 2015 • 15999 CALL STATISTICS 2011 • Almost half of all calls were related to Psycho Social Mental Health issues • About 20% are related to child maltreatment – mainly physical abuse, emotional abuse and sexual abuse • OTHER GOVERNMENT STATISTICS • Issues related to Family Relationships are on the rise (Divorce rates have gone up to about 20% ( about 40,000 ) • Teenage pregnancies have risen to 18,000 in 2011 with child marriages and baby abandonment increasing • Bullying in schools and cyber bullying cases are on the rise

C4CP What can you do:Objectives • Raise Awareness of Issues relating to Child Protection • Empower and Engage Children and Adults into taking action for child protection • Highlight the importance of a Child Protection Policy (CPP )and implementing it in key organisations • Raise awareness of 15999 Childline number

C4CP What can you do:Adult Target Outcomes • 250 registered childcare centres with CPP • 12,000 adults in registered child care centres with increased knowledge of CP • 20,000 parents informed about CP & CPP • Reaching out to 60,000 children • Situational Analysis of VAC in Malaysia • 3 year Commitment to reach out to families and children through 1000 childcare centres

Reaching Out : C4CP Campaign 2012Childcare Centres For Child Protection Campaign • Launched on 9th June at the National Conference on Prevention of Violence Against Children • Online and on ground Signature Petition to the Prime Minister to take action on the prevention of VAC by our partner NGO STOP IT NOW ! Dear Mr Prime Minister , STOP IT NOW! Prevent VAC Campaign 2012 I / We believe the safety of our 11.4 million children under 18 years (40% of our population) should be given top priority by our Government. I / We want you to help Prevent Violence Against Children. I /We hereby pledge to help stop violence against children by doing :- ………………………………………………………………………….. Please help us make this happen. C4CP What can you do:Target Outcomes (Children) • 140 core team of child advocates from marginalised communities trained throughout Malaysia • 5000 children empowered and inspired through meeting other children at the District Training Workshops ,Forum and Carnival • 10% of Malaysia-registered children on Facebook engaged in CP discussions • Full range of CP materials for children developed by children

C4CP What can you do:Childrens Stream : Key Activities • Children for Child Protection Child consultations at district ,state & national levels –collaboration with NGO partners • ‘Hang a Banner for Child Protection’ in all rural & urban schools with Ministry of Education • Weekly media promotion of CP Issues leading up to 19thNovember – with media partners • Children for Child Protection Carnival – with corporate partners for funding & event org.

  25. TRAINING OF CARE PROVIDERS, TEACHERS PARENTS Child Rights & Child Protection Policy Training of Care providers ,Teachers and Parents in 14 States in partnership with the National Childcare Association as part of C4CP Campaign

  26. Training of Trainers for Service Clubs Emotional Literacy Programme for Schools & Shelter Homes Childline Malaysia & Soroptimist International Outreach to at risk children in 2 schools and 10 shelter homes in urban poor settings in 2012 -2013 with a view to extend to other States

  27. Reaching out to Urban Families who have no access to quality childcare in partnership with other NGOs 120 children ages 0-6 years from single parent families, low income families have access to fullday care for RM10 per month SO MOTHERS CAN WORK
