  2. To report what someone said in ENGLISH you use the simple past, the past progressive, or the conditional tense. • Spanish uses a variety of tenses as well for reported speech. Reported Speech

  3. Simple past tense: • Nico said that he went to the movies. • Past progressive tense: • Nico said that he was going to the movies. • Conditional tense: • Nico said that he would go to the movies. Reported Speech

  4. You use reported speech to relay information about what someone said without using a direct quote. Reported Speech

  5. The second verb in the sentence with reported speech can use the preterite, the imperfect, or the conditional. Reported Speech

  6. Preterite: • Direct quote:Nico dijo, “Fui al teatro.” • Reported Speech:Nico dijo que fue al teatro. Reported Speech

  7. Imperfect: • Direct quote:Nico dijo, “Voy al teatro.” • Reported Speech:Nico dijo que iba al teatro. Reported Speech

  8. Conditional: • Direct quote:Nico dijo, “Iré al teatro.” • Reported speech:Nico dijo que iría al teatro. Reported Speech

  9. If you use “decir” to express what someone told another to do, use the subjunctive for the 2nd verb: • Nico dice que vayas al teatro. • Nico says that you should go to the theater. Reported Speech
