  2. Junior Info Sheets 2 • Junior Info sheets are used by counselors so that we Have important details about the student’s college Planning, interests, activities, and etc. • Juniors are asked to complete the info sheets during This meeting and leave with your counselor. • This is a very important tool for counselors when writing recommendation letters and making referrals for Scholarships.

  3. Graduation Requirements 3 • At least 22 credits are required to graduate. • 4-English, 3-Math (must take math every year), 3 Science, 3 Social Studies, Health and PE, Arts/Humanities, and 7 elective credits. • Students who have attended another high school may have additional requirements. • Check with your counselor for complete graduation requirements.

  4. Transcripts and Credits 4 • Check transcript for accuracy • Are you scheduled into the classes you need to be a senior next year? • Make a note of any discrepancies on the transcript and discuss with counselor • Weighted GPA is used to determine rank

Junior Year Plan of Action 5 *The Road to College checklist is a fall/spring schedule with suggested steps for juniors to take that will help them to be organized and on pace with the college planning process *It is strongly recommended that juniors follow this checklist which will prepare them for college admissions during Senior year

  6. College Visits 6 • Policy: Juniors may schedule college campus visits. • These visits should not exceed a total of 3 school days. • The procedure: A request by the student’s parent must be submitted to the counselor three days in advance of the visit.

  7. Test Registration 7 • Check the ACT and/or SAT dates and get registered. • Apply online at act.org or collegeboard.com • Some out of state schools require SAT II’s which are subject specific tests.

  8. Scholarship Information 8 • A scholarship listing is generated and updated about every two weeks, posted in classrooms, in the guidance office and on Henry Clay’s website. • Also students can check the scholarship bulletin board in the counseling office. • See your counselor for more info.

  9. Governor’s Scholars Program 9 • Five-week residential summer program • For outstanding Kentucky junior students • Established in 1983 • Provides academic enrichment, personal growth, challenging liberal arts program • Full co-curricular, residential life experience • Application online at www.gsp.ky.gov • Application deadline is December 2, 2014.

Governor’s School for the Arts 10 • 3 week residential program offered for the states most creative high school students • 10th and 11th graders can apply • 9 artistic disciplines: creative writing, dance, drama, instrumental music, musical theater, visual art, architecture, new media, and vocal music • Audition and/or review required • Additional info at www.kentuckygsa.com

Governor’s School for 11 Entrepreneurs • Free 3-week residential summer program • Students will utilize science, technology, engineering, art, math and business skills to turn an idea into a product • Open to 9th, 10th and 11th graders • June 21-July 11, 2015 • Site to be announced at a later date • Learn more at http://gse.kstc.com

  12. Central KY. College Night 12 • College Night will be held on Monday, October 13th at 6:00pm at Rupp Arena • About 125 colleges and universities from all over the US will be represented. • Henry Clay has hosted this event for over 30 years.

  13. Recommendation Letters and Resumes 13 • A recommendation letter is required for most scholarship applications. • These rec letters can come from a guidance counselor, a teacher, or a community person. • The resume is most helpful to the counselor in producing the recommendation letter. • Please include in your resume awards, accomplishments, activities, etc. • When you request a recommendation letter from a teacher also give them a copy of your resume. • Also please be considerate in allowing at least 2 weeks for completion of your recommendation letter.

  14. NCAA Guidelines 14 • If you are a college-bound athlete, you must meet NCAA academic eligibility requirements. • The NCAA guidelines have changed in recent years. • www.eligibilitycenter.org • See your counselor if you have more questions.

Junior Meetings 2013Final Notes 15 • If students have not already started the process, the Junior year is when students need to seriously begin examining their college and career options. • Juniors should take college tests, make college visits, and start searching for scholarships. • In the college admissions process, nothing is more important than a student’s high school academic record. • Juniors should work even harder at achieving their best grades. • Colleges use test scores to help them determine a student’s readiness for college level work. It is sometimes a good plan to enroll in a study class before you take the test.

  16. A final thought….. 16 • Remember these 5 simple rules to be happy… *Free your heart from hatred. *Free your mind from fears. *Work hard. *Give more. *Expect less. • Congratulations to the class of 2016!!
