  3. Osseous (Bone) Tissue Components • Connective tissue • Calcium salts • Osteocytes (bone cells) within lacunae (pockets) • Canaliculi-small canals feed osteocytes • Periosteum (fiber out,cellular in) • Figure 6-1c

  4. Bone Matrix • Ca3(PO4)2 + Ca(OH)2--> Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2 • calcium phosphate + calcium hydroxide-> hydroxyapatite Compression • Collagen fibers (protein) Tension • Osteocytes & other cell types

  5. Bone Cells • Osteocytes-mature bone cells within lacunae sandwiched between lamellae layers • recycle calcium & repair damaged bone • Osteoblasts-cuboidal & produce new bone • become osteocytes • Osteoprogenitor cells-stem cells • Osteoclasts-multinucleated WBC, osteolysis
