  1. Blog : HeraldryAndCrests.com FACTS ABOUT COATS OF ARMS Coat of arms has been age long source of admiration. Families who possessed coat of arms back in those days were exceptionally respected. Since only very important people were allowed to wear the coat of arms you could not go ahead and get it if you wanted to. Coats of arms were awarded only to people who had a great influence in the build up of the kingdom. Only by achieving something of immense meaning and bravery were people awarded the coat of arms. Women folk were not allowed to wear any coat of arms however there were family coat of arms which they could wear. The family coat of arms was more like recognition of the clan. In those days families used to branch out a lot and it was symbolic to keep track of the lineage so coat of arms makers were hired to make a coat of arms which would be the sign of the family. Only high class sections could have coats of arms Although this was a popular idea back in the day, not every family could get one made. Firstly making a coat of arms would require a lot of money and secondly a family would have to be immensely good in certain aspects or belong to royalty to posses their own coat of arms. Farmers, peasants and other sections of the kingdom were not allowed to wear any coat of arms. The design of these crests used to vary from kingdom to kingdom. Many coats of arms used to be a bit similar but they were never identical.
