  1. TBEC Paragraph Overview

  2. TBEC • T= Thesis • B= Background • E = Evidence • C = Commentary

  3. T= Thesis • This is your thesis statement; make a point about what you’ve read. • Don’t use words like “I,” “you,” or “things.” • Good example: Bravery is a characteristic that appears during times of crisis. • Bad example: I think the dog in the story was brave.

  4. B= Background • Do this part after you do the evidence. You will give some background on the text and then lead in to the evidence. • Give enough background so the reader would be familiar with the story even if he or she hasn’t read it. • Example: In the story, Where the Red Fern Grows, a boy and his two puppies are sleeping in a cave at nighttime when he hears the scream of a mountain lion. While the boy is frozen in fear, the male puppy springs to action to defend the boy and other dog. He “[put your evidence here]…..

  5. E = Evidence • Find the best part of something in the story that proves your point. • You don’t have to use the entire sentence. • For example, if you’re trying to prove bravery, you could use: “Raising his small red head high in the air, he bawled his challenge to the devil cat” (Rawls 17-18). I put in the author and line numbers.

  6. C = Commentary • This is where you restate (in different words). You can start right after the evidence with “This shows that…” and what it shows. • The very last part of your commentary should be a message that can be applied to life. • Example: This shows that the boy dog displayed courage in a dangerous situation. Even though he was smaller than the mountain lion, it didn’t prevent him from defending others. In life, people can show bravery in many different ways by standing up to someone or something that’s bigger than themselves.

  7. Completed TBEC ParagraphT= Thesis; B = Background; E = Evidence; C = Commentary • Bravery is a characteristic that appears during times of crisis. In the story, Where the Red Fern Grows, a boy and his two puppies are sleeping in a cave at nighttime when he hears the scream of a mountain lion. While the boy is frozen in fear, the male puppy springs to action to defend the boy and other dog. He raised “his small red head high in the air, [and] bawled his challenge to the devil cat” (Rawls 17-18). This shows that the boy dog displayed courage in a dangerous situation. Even though he was smaller than the mountain lion, it didn’t prevent him from defending others.
