Decision Support Trends • NextGen - Decision Support for Aviation Services • Decision making from the International to National to Regional to local scales • Translation of environmental information into impacts • Requires CONSISTENCY across time, spatial domains at higher accuracies and resolutions • 4-D Weather Data Cube • Seamless access to NWS and NOAA data and information

Decision Support Trends • Advances in Information Technology • Enables standardized, streamlined access to information in formats users understand and can exploit • Transition from a “product-centric” culture to an “information-centric” culture • Trend started by NDFD • Will accelerate with NextGen • Enables tailored decision making by moving away from fixed thresholds

Decision Support Trends • Single Authoritative Source • Identification/fusion of best information available • To be used for “official” decision making within the FAA • Concept easily expanded beyond aviation • Accessibility and contributions to the Single Authoritative Source • Explicit role for industry and the private sector

  7. Emerging Issues • Consistency • How are you affected by the consistency in NDFD? • Is consistency an issue for the Partners? • Accessibility • What is needed from the Partner’s perspective? • Social Science • Technology enhances communications….if we know what to communicate

Partnership • Technology is making information access and exploitation easier for both Government and Private Sector • Access and tailoring of information will be become easier with new IT advances • How does NWS best support the Government makers? • How do we build on today’s partnerships given the expanding accessibility of information? • Need to start a dialog on how to address these emerging issues

Summary • Decision support is a key theme of the NWS strategic plan • Builds on existing decision support capabilities • Leverages NextGen • Technology advances will enhance decision support and provide many opportunities for both the Government and the Partners • Partnership is the key to delivering the greatest benefit to the United States
