  2. Get a Grip! What are Grips? • Small squares displayed on an object at its definition points when selected by the mouse. • Quick and easy way to edit objects. • Number and location of grips depends on object selected. • Allows object editing as following; Stretch Move Copy Mirror RotateScaleChange Properties

Hover Grip Status Grip Status Classification; • Cold – not displayed • object not selected • object not highlighted • grip can be snapped to • Warm – displayed in blue • select object • object highlights • Hot – displayed in red • select object • object highlights • grip selected • object can be edited • Hover – displayed in green • object selected • object highlighted • When mouse hovers over grip of selected object.

  4. General Editing General Procedures for Editing with Grips: • Select object to edit with mouse. • Object will highlight • Grips will appear blue (warm) • Hover over desired grip. Grip will turn green when mouse is properly positioned to acquire grip. • Acquire the grip or grips required for the edit (left mouse click). Use [Shift] to acquire multiple grips. • Object remains highlighted • Selected grips will turn red (hot) • Perform the edit.

  5. General Editing General Procedures for Editing with Grips: • Multiple grips selected by depressing [Shift] key during grip selection. • Number of grips selected affects outcome of edit. • Particular grip selected also affects edit result. 1 Grip Selected 3 Grips Selected

Grips - Stretch STRETCHMode – default mode for grip editing. • Similar to STRETCH command, but allows Copy option. • One or more grips can be selected – Unselected grips remain stationary, selected grips are moved. Geometry between selected and unselected grips is stretched. • To select multiple grips, the [Shift] key must be depressed during selection. • After grip selection, a base point grip is selected from displayed grips (blue or red), and command line responds; Command: ** STRETCH ** Specify stretch point or [Base point/Copy/Undo/eXit]:

Grips - Stretch Command: ** STRETCH ** Specify stretch point or [Base point/Copy/Undo/eXit]: • Stretch point - pick point and base grip stretches to new point. • Copy – makes copies of stretched portions of object. • Base Point – allows selction of any point (grip, osnap, keyboard entry) as new base point for stretching.

  9. Exercise 1: • Create 2 identical rectangles as shown in blue (use COPY). • Use grips to stretch each rectangle into the shapes shown in pink and green (pink is exactly twice the width of blue). X X 2X

Grips - Move MOVE Mode - Allows entire object to be moved. • Method 1: Shortcut Menu • Select object to highlight it. • Select Move from shortcut menu. • Select base point and new location point. • Method 2: Quick Drag • Select object to highlight it. • Reselect object with left mouse (not on grip) and drag to new location.

  11. Grips - Move MOVE Mode - Allows entire object to be moved. • Method 3: Mid/Center/Insert Drag • Move mode is automatically activated if particular grips are selected; • Midpoint grip on line • Center grip on circle, arc, or ellipse • Insert grip from text or block

  13. Grips - Copy COPY Mode - Allows entire object to be Copied. • Method 1: Shortcut Menu • Allows copy & paste options similar to MS Office. Important: this method can be used to copy objects from one drawing to another! • Select objects to highlight them and right click for shortcut menu. • Select Copy to place copy of objects in buffer. • Select Paste to paste objects from buffer. • Copy with Base Point allows insertion point to be selected for better control.

  14. Grips - Copy COPY Mode - Allows entire object to be copied. • Method 2: QuickDragCopy • Select objects to highlight them. • Reselect object with left mouse and hold (not on grip), depress [Ctrl] key and drag to new location.

Grips - Copy COPY Mode - Allows entire object to be copied. • Method 3: Copy Selection - Identical toCOPY command • Select objects to highlight them. • Right click for shortcut menu and choose Copy Selection. • Pick a base point and then choose 2nd point for displacement. • Multiple copy is enabled.

Grips - Rotate ROTATE Mode - Allows entire object to be rotated. • Method 1: Shortcut Menu - Identical toROTATEcommand • Select object to highlight it. • Select ROTATE from shortcut menu. • Select base point and enter angle or Reference option. • Method 2: Rotate with Multiple Copy • Select object to highlight it. • Pre-select base point by selecting base grip. • Select ROTATE from shortcut menu. • Select COPY from shortcut menu. • Enter angle or rotate option consecutively for each rotated copy desired.

  21. Exercise 3: • Create a line and circle as shown in blue below. • Use grips with the ROTATE and COPY options to create multiple rotated copies in a single operation as shown.

  22. Grips – Other Options • Grips can also be used to: • Mirror objects • Scale objects • These options are accessible through the shortcut menu. • These are less commonly used and won’t be discussed. • You can experiment on your own if interested.

  23. Grips - Properties Properties Command • Grips allow properties of an object to be modified. • Select object to display grips. • Select PROPERTIES from the shortcut menu. • Other Methods: • Command: PROPERTIES • Toolbar menu (toggles on/off).

Grips - Properties • The control buttons on the Properties and Layers tool bars can also be used to modify properties of selected objects. Layer ControlColor Control Linetype ControlLine Weight Control • Select objects to display their grips. • Select control button item and objects will inherit those properties. Example: select objects then select a color from Color Control. Selected objects will inherit that color, but remain on their original layers.

Grips – Match Properties Matching Properties • Properties of objects can be transferred from object to object. • Such properties include; Color Layer Linetype Linetype scale Line weight • Command: MATCHPROP • Specify source object. • Specify destination object or select Settings option to determine which properties get transferred.

Exercise 4 • Set up the following layers: • Use the 0-layer to create 3 circles as in figure A. • Then use the PROPERTIES command and PROPERTIES toolbar to individually change the properties for each object as shown in B. • Finally, use the MATCHPROP command to create image C.   32. Grip Settings • Use the Selection Tab of the Options dialog box to alter the visual character and operation of grips. DDMenu:Tools>Options • Allows modification of: • Grip Size • Grip Color • Grips within Blocks (not recommended)

Grips - Copy COPY Mode - Allows entire object to be copied. • Method 3: Move Multi-Copy • Select object to highlight it. • Pre-select base point by selecting a grip. • Select Move from shortcut menu. • Depress [Shift] while selecting new location point. A copy will be made. • Additional copies can be placed at other points by releasing [Shift] and picking new points. • If [Shift] remains depressed while selecting new point, consecutive copies will be made using the initial offset.

  34. Exercise 2: • Create a rectangle and circle as shown in blue below. • Use grips with the MOVE option and [Shift] key to create the pink copies. Each group should be copied with a single edit. X X

Grips - Scale SCALE Mode - Allows object to be scaled. • Method 1: Shortcut Menu (identical to SCALE command) • Select object to highlight it. • Select SCALE from shortcut menu. • Select base point and enter scale factor or Reference option. • Method 2: Scale with Multiple Copy • Select object to highlight it. • Pre-select base point by selecting base grip. • Select SCALE from shortcut menu. • Select COPY from shortcut menu. • Enter scale factor or Base point option or Reference option consecutively for each scaled copy desired.

Grips - Mirror MIRROR Mode - Allows object to be Mirrored. • Method 1: Shortcut Menu • Select object to highlight it. • Pre-select base point by selecting base grip (required). • Select MIRROR from shortcut menu. • Enter 2nd point for mirror line or Base point option. • A copy will only be created if the Copy option is chosen, in which case multiple copy is enabled.

  39. Exercise 4: • Create a line and arc as shown in blue. • Use grips with the MIRROR option to create the mirrored arc shown in yellow. • Use grips with the ROTATE and multiple COPY options to create the pink petals shown (Angle between each petal is 60).

  41. Grips - Properties Properties Command - Other Methods: • Command: PROPERTIES • Properties pallette will display. • Then select objects. • Toolbar menu - toggles properties pallette on/off.

  42. Exercise 5: • Create 3 new layers: • Create 3 rectangles using default 0 layer (shown in black). • Use PROPERTIES from shortcut menu to put 1st rectangle on RED layer. • Use layer controls to put 2nd and 3rd rectangles on the GREEN and YELLOW layers respectively.
