Background • Population: ~12 million • Adult HIV prevalence: 13.7% • ANC sero-prevalence : 16.1% • An estimated 1,1 mil Zimbabweans are HIV positive* • Of these, 151, 749 are children 0-14 years* • New pediatric HIV infections are estimated at 14,976* (90% from MTCT) • 1,090 patients dying weekly due to AIDS Source: DHS 2005/6 & MOHCW HIV estimates 2009* / Dr Angela Mushavi’s Presentation at a media training June 11 – Nyanga,Zimbabwe

  3. Why Mobilize Communities 90 % of pregnant women receive ANC (ZDHS 2010/11) down from 94% in the ZDHS2005/6 only 19% in the first 3 months of pregnancy

  4. Why mobilize communities..2 With >4 years towards national elimination goal, we need to speak to a lot of people, quickly

  5. Why the mass media? • Reach large numbers of people – quickly • +/-22 papers in circulation • Radio reaches nearly all of Zimbabwe • Broadcasts in local languages

  6. What we have done with media 2011 • National sensitization workshop • Share knowledge & concepts • Sensitize about elimination • Collaborated with MoHCW • Trained 30 journalists

  7. Results • Increased understanding about PMTCT & elimination of pediatric HIV • Several articles on elimination published in the paper, TV coverage & radio broadcasts • Increased collaboration with other implementers

  8. How Capacity Building Media Helped • Contributed to raising awareness • Contributed to generating demand for services • Increased collaboration with partners

  9. Challenges / Recommendations • Mass Media – profit making • ?Avoid blitz
