Consideration #1: Focusing on the best instruction and content for K-12 STEM teacher education • NOT limited or guided by what we can do or already do, but by what we should do to help teachers help students learn • E.g., 7 features of “exemplary programs” (Darling-Hammond, 2010) • NOT focusing on the best known instructors or best known universities as a default • Designed by relevant experts and practitioners in STEM teacher education • E.g., study of 43 “touchstones” in secondary mathematics methods courses (Taylor, Yee, & Otten, 2014) SJSU MOOC Conference 2014

Consideration #2 Informing and being informed by existing teacher preparation and professional development organizations • ultimate access to all to the designed modules/activities (open-source) vs. “branded” materials • flexibility (and expectation) to tailor online learning experiences to local contexts • LOOC vs. MOOC? • “Menu” of modules, activities?
