  3. REASON FOR CELEBRATING CAVADI • Parvati gave Kartikeya a vel to kill Tarak • Tarak had got the boon that no existing God could kill him

  4. REASON FOR CELEBRATING CAVADI • The episode of Sage Agasthya and Idumban • Idumban was carrying 2 Mountains according to Sage Agasthya’s command • After taking rest he could not lift them • Kartikeya, disguised as a child was on one mountain • A fight followed • Kartikeya was pleased with Idumban’s dedication

  5. START OF PREPARATIONS • Cavadi starts with Flag Hoisting Ceremony 10 days before the actual festival (Kodi Etram)

  6. PREPARATIONS • Cleaning of homes & yards • Fasting • Only pure vegetarian dishes • No alcohol, no cigarettes • No non-veg

  7. IMPORTANCE OF FASTING • To have control over senses • Purify oneself, get rid of negative tendencies • Become better human beings • Come nearer to God

  8. HARDSHIPS ENDURED DURING CAVADI

  9. ON CAVADI DAY • Wake up early • Proceed to nearby river banks where procession starts • Procession assembles/unites people • No discrimination

  10. PRAYER AT THE KOVIL • Usual rituals take place at the Kovil • The following day is known as ‘Kodi Erakam’….the sacred flag hoisted 10 days earlier is brought down
