  2. Step 1: External Exam • The body is weighed and measured • Check under nails • Smell the clothes • Check lividity of legs- tells body position at time of death • Extract vitreous humor for toxicologist

  3. Step 2: Internal Exam • Make a Y-incision • Incision is very deep (to ribs) • Flaps are pulled open (top flap covers face)

  4. Step 3: Viewing the organs • Ribs are cut off • The sternal plate and anterior wall is cut away

  5. Step 4: Removal of organs • The Rokitansky Method (remove all organs) • Place all organs in sink or on table • Dissect all organs

  6. Step 5: Removing the brain • Make an incision from ear to the other • Cut and remove scalp from underlying skull and pull forward • Remove top of skull with vibrating saw • Gently remove brain • Can dissect right away or place it in 20% formalin to fix it for future dissection

  7. Step 6: Weighing the organs • Weigh all organs except intestines and stomach • Drain intestines of undigested food • Cut open stomach and examine contents

  8. Step 7: Returning organs to body • Organs can be placed back into body • Body could also be filled with a filler material

  9. Step 8: Sewing up the body • Forensic technician will sew body back up • Once the body is sewn up the autopsy is complete (not including brain and tissue analysis) • The stitching on the body resembles that of baseball stitching
