  2. Western clothes trends in India Indian clothing changed a lot throughout its history. Earlier when terms like stitching and sewing were alien to indian population people used to wear clothes which tied together. But after indus civilization a lot has changed, this timeline will definitely help you understand how clothing has evolved in india. 18th century to before independence: That was the time when britishers came to india and brought a change in indian clothing. At this time indian men perefer wearing dhotis & kurtas and sarres were the common clothing for women. 1960’s: sarees were replaced by short and fitted Kurtis paired with tight chudidars. This was the beginning of glamour and experimentation with clothes. 1970’s: that was the time Bollywood started adopting western clothing sense and started influencing the people to wear bell bottom pants, platform heels, long skirts, maxi dresses, funky jewellery.

  3. Evolution 1960’s: sarees were replaced by short and fitted Kurtis paired with tight chudidars. This was the beginning of glamour and experimentation with clothes. 1970’s: that was the time Bollywood started adopting western clothing sense and started influencing the people to wear bell bottom pants, platform heels, long skirts, maxi dresses, funky jewellery. 1980’s: Denims wre introduced in this period and designers also started experimenting with indiansaarees making it more revealing and attractive. 1990’s:Shorts, skirts, dresses, strapy tops, jackets, tight jeans, short and long tops with all different kind of sleeves were introduced.

  4. Current Scenario The current scenario however has seen the boldest version of all times. Westernized dressing sense has now become the cult clothing for indian people. As mostly these days people prefer wearing jeans, t-shirts in their daily life. Actually indian sarees and dhotis have just become the clothing to be wore on traditional days or on the festive occasion.

Why people chose western clothing? • One of the many reason why people opted for western clothing was the impact the britishers left on them about being suited up and fully dressed. • Also when bollywood stars started moving towards westernized dressing sense, it influenced the indian population the most and strived them to adopt western style. • Other factors include, ease of wearing jeans & shirt, getting a relaxed feeling, and people have reason to match modern culture.

  6. Effect of Western CLothing • The major impact of western clothing in india was the change in dressing sense it brought about in the people of India. Also it has impacted the clothing industry as with the introduction of E-Commerce retailers started moving to websites and selling their brands online which has proved them quite beneficial. The websites that majorly sells only western clothes are KOOVS, JABONG, CRAFTVILLA.
