  2. Chapter 1 Introduction

  3. “What are the effects of Thai honey on acne?”

  4. Background and Settings Honey is a global household natural sweetener. It is cheap, easy to find, and non-toxic. Honey has been used as sweetener, food, supplement, wound healer and cosmetics. Honey has been used to treat bacterial infections since the ancient time. It was found that honey has a great antimicrobial activity. Therefore, it was claimed to have an ability of treating acne. Honey has been used to treat acne and other skin infections for thousands of years. However, there is not yet any study showing the exact effects of Thai honey on acne. This research will be done to study the effects that Thai honey has on acne.

  5. Problem Statement Researches showed that honey is extremely effective in treating almost all kinds of skin condition. It was clear that honey has a great antimicrobial activity. A research showed that honey can kill Staphylococci, a very harmful bacteria. But there is no research showing its effects on Propionibacterium acne, the bacteria that causes acne. Therefore, the ability of honey to treat acne is still a myth. The problem is “What are the effects of honey on Propionibacterium acne, the bacteria that causes acne?” Therefore, our research question is “What are the effects of Thai honey on acne?”

  6. Objectives - To test the ability of Thai honey for treating acne - To test honey’s effect on acne, acne scar, and facial skin - To determine the most suitable condition for honey to treat acne - To compare the acne treating activity with other products

  7. Hypothesis Acnes applied with honey will heal faster than ones that weren’t applied due to the antimicrobial properties of honey.

  8. Definition of Terms Honey Acne Propionibacterium acne Antimicrobial activity Inflammation Subject

  9. Limitations of the Study - Subjects with different types of skin may have different result. - Honey can only treat acnes which occurred by bacterial infections. - Subjects may not give full cooperation with the course. - Different honeys have different antimicrobial activities.

  10. Basic Assumptions This research is to study the effects that Thai honey has on acne. Due to the fact that acne commonly occurs in teenagers, therefore our subjects are selected to be people with acne in the age between 15-25.

  11. Chapter 2 Review of literature

  12. P. E. Pochi. (1992). The Pathogenesis and Treatment of ACNE. Annual Review of Medicine, Vol. 41: 187 -198 This research studied the pathogenesis and treatment of acne. From the research,it concluded that acne is caused by the abnormality of the keratinizing epithelium on the follicle which is caused by the secretion of sebum that leads to the inflammation by Propionibacterium acne.Treatment of acne can be done by using drugs with antikeratinizing, antibacterial, and antiseborrheicactions. From the research, we knew that one important cause of acne is from the inflammation by the bacteria Propionibacterium acne. Therefore, it is likely that honey can be used to treat acne because of its antibacterial activity.

  13. Allen, K. L., Molan P.C. & Reid G.M. (1991). A survey of the antibacterial activity of some New Zealand honeys. Journal Of Pharmacy and Pharmacology43(12), 817-822. The research was done to test the antimicrobial activity in honeys from different flowers. Honeys from 26 different flower sources were tested. The result was that different flowers give different levels of antimicrobial activities. The bests are honeys from manuka and vipers bugloss. From the research, it is best to specify the source of the honey being tested because they have different antimicrobial activities. Therefore we specify our honey to be Thai honey.

  14. Chanchao C. (2009). Properties and antimicrobial activity ofApis Dorsatahoney From Thailand. Pak J Med Sci, 25, 313-318. This research studied the properties and antimicrobial activity of Apis Dorsatahoney From Thailand. From the research, (25-100% (v/v)) dilutions of honey could inhibit the growth ofS. aureus. And also A. dorsatahoney can inhibit the growth of some bacteria. Therefore, it suggests that honey could be used as an antimicrobial agent. From the research, we can now be sure that Thai honey has an antimicrobial activity and can be used as antimicrobial agent which may be able to treat acne.

  15. (1996). A comparison of the efficacy and safety of adapalene gel 0.1% and tretinoin gel 0.025% in the treatment of acne vulgaris: a multicenter trial.Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology 34(3), 482-485. In this research, they studied the efficacy and safety of two drugs in treating acne. They studied by selecting 223 patients and applied the test materials to the entire face daily, for a period of 12 weeks. The results were obtained before treatment and in weeks 2,4,8, and 12 after treatment. From the research, we could use similar methodology in collecting data but instead of applying testing material (honey) to the entire face, we apply it only on acne.

  16. Chapter 3 Procedure

  17. Research Design We will have 2 sample groups; one is the experimental group, the subjects will apply honey on acne everyday before bed and the other one is the control group, the subjects will not be using any treatment. The course will take 3 months. The number of acne of the subjects will be counted regularly and compared to the previous one. The data will then be calculated to the percent of the disappearing of acne and compared between the experimental and control group.

  18. Subject selection Subjects are randomly selected to be 80 teenagers (40 males, 40 females) in KKU age between 15 and 25 who have acne. Subjects who want to quit or did not fully cooperate throughout the course will become non-respondents.

  19. Outcome measures 40 subjects;20 males, 20 females (experimental group) will be having acne treatment by honey for 3 months while the other 40 (control group) will be having no treatment. The number of acne will be collected before the treatment and after 2, 4, 8, and 12 weeks.

  20. Condition of testing The subjects of the experimental group are given honey to be applied on the acne. All subjects are prohibited to use any other treatment while participating in the course.

  21. Treatments Apply honey on acne and leave it for 15 minutes then wash out with water . Do it every day before bed.

  22. Data analysis Thedata will be obtained by counting the number acne before the treatment and after 2, 4, 8, and 12 weeks. The data will then be calculated as “percentage difference of acne disappearing between the honey and non-honey group of the sample” The sample’s percentage differencewill be converted to the population’s percentage difference using inferential statistics. Statistical significance test will be done to ensure that the data obtained is correct. Software used: microsoft excel, SPSS

  23. Chapter 4 Results

  24. Predicted Results From the research, we can predict the results that in the sample that apply honey on acne (experimental group, both male and female), acne heals much faster than in the sample that don’t apply honey on acne (control group, both male and female) due to the antimicrobial activity of Thai honey.

  25. Chapter 5 Discussion

  26. Predicted Discussion Thai honey has an antibacterial activity. It can kill Propionibacterium acne. As a result, Thai honey can treat acne that is caused by the inflammation of Propionibacterium acne. From the predicted result, we can conclude that Thai honey has the ability to treat acne. Further researches such as marketing researches can be done in the future using this research as a base.
