  1. INFORMATION RETRIEVAL NOR EZAN BIN OMAR

  2. What? Information retrieval! • Process of searching, collecting and using the information that suit to the needs of the searcher

  3. Why important? • Assist users in searching and collecting the information by using the right way • Assist users in determining the right information • Encourage users to utilize the retrieval tools • Prevent users from drown in a pool of information

  4. Valuable information • Characteristic • Precise information • Suit/fulfill the needs • Current/up-to-date information

  5. Method of Information Retrieval • Manual • Computerized/online

  6. Manual Method of Information Retrieval • Printed materials • Microform • Printed bibliography and index • Needs to search one by one of entries to identify which information that suit to the requirements

  7. Printed materials • Similar with books • Advantages • Straight forward to use • Predictable in cost • Usable by more than one person simultaneously • Disadvantages • Space to house • Maintaining current ness • Limitation on retrieval strategies

  8. Microform • Small reels of plastic film that contain a reduced image, read or copied on reader / printer. • Advantages • Save space • Maybe frequently updated • Disadvantages • Costly • Need user orientation • One user at a time • Limitation on search strategies

  9. Computerized Information Retrieval • CD-ROM • CD-RAM • CD-I • Multimedia presentation • Database • Online database • Internet, etc.

  10. CD-ROM • Electronic storage medium that produced and read by means of laser technology • Specifically designed for ease of use, to facilitate end-user searching • Offer both novice and expert mode interfaces • End-user perform searches without intervention/support of an intermediary • Include animation, graphics, video clips, etc.

  11. CD-ROM retrieval features • Index • Search structure – term selection • Search features – Boolean • Search profile management – search status, statistics gathering, etc.

  12. Database/Online Database • Available in public arena, access remotely via an online search services • Accessed through online hosts, or acquired on CD-ROM • Can be reference or source database

  13. Reference Database • Bibliographic database • Include citations, sometime abstracts • Tell user what has been written, which source can be located • Catalogue database • Show the stock of a given library or library network but not the contents of these documents • Referral database • Offer references to information such as name, addresses of organizations

  14. Source Database • Contain original source data • A type of electronic document • May include full text of journal articles, newsletters, dictionaries, encyclopedias, etc.

  15. Internet • Collection of interlinked computer networks, networks of networks • Connect millions of computers simultaneously • Gateway to online database, library catalogues, collection of software, document archives, etc. • Provide global connectivity via TCP/IP and OSI protocol. • Providers control the resources • Uses search engines

  16. Advantages High storage capacity Portability Fixed cost Searching capability Durability Networking Allow complex searching Store images and sound End user systems Disadvantages Limitation in currency of data High costs Slow in access time Time consuming in developing point-of-use instruction Requires workspace for equipment Computerized Information Retrieval System
