  2. What is FTP? • File Transfer Protocol • standard network protocol • protocol that allows users to copy and transfer files from one computer to another over a TCP computer network or the Internet. (e.g. : Windows – Linux, PC – PC) • FTP uses the Internet's TCP/IP protocols to enable data transfer. • simplest way to exchange files between computers on the Internet.

  3. How Does FTP works? • FTP works on the principal of a client/server. • Transferring files from a client computer to a server computer is called "uploading" and transferring from a server to a client is "downloading". • A client program enables the user to interact with a server in order to access information and services on the server computer. Files that can be transferred are stored on computers called FTP servers.

  4. Advantages of FTP • Fastest • Efficient • Allow to transfer back and forth • Highly secure • Transfer large files

  5. Common File Transfer • HTTP • Can download or save files • More secure : users can not upload • P2P • Does not have server • Individual computer hosts the file and others can access *both can’t transfer large files*

  6. Daily Life • Download music, movies, pictures file • Online auction : Bidding info • Gaming (mmorpg - massively multiplayer online playing game (e.g. : final fantasy, rift, guild wars) • BlogSpot : Uploading pictures • Web hosting : From text to FTP server
