  1. Nucleair power centrals & its waste in Belgium Olivia Nelis

  2. Working of

  3. How ?

  4. Advantagesnuclairpower • Volume of waste is verysmall. For examplecompared to chemicalwaste • Low CO2 emission • Waste disappearsbecause of half-life. BUT is independant! Seconds ? Orcanstillbe long time! => Storageneeded!

  5. Different kinds of radiation

  6. How to store • Nucleair waste + glass: clot in SS barrel • Waituntilit’snolongerharmful

  7. Disposal: 2 options • Safe storage in an underground disposal. Nuclear waste goes to a deep stable layer where it can safely be deleted. • Transmutation: The conversion of long-lived radioactive waste into short-lived. At laboratory scale this is already possible.

  8. Belgium: 7 reactors • NPP Doel(4 reactors) • TihangeNPP (3 reactors) • Studycenter SCK • CEN Mol • Research Reactor in Ghent (INW).  • On the territory of Mol / Dessel is the national nuclear waste processing Belgoprocess. • In Dessel are two factories for production of nuclear fuel: FBFC and Belgonucléaire.

  9. Whichmakesus • 3th worldwide for the share of electricity generated in nuclear power plants. • 55% of our energy is nucleair energy

  10. Geologicaldisposal

  11. Surfacedisposal

  12. (!:Lessharmful waste)

  13. Fusion ? • No nucleair waste • No chainreaction (canbestopped) • inexhaustible

  14. Belgiangovernment • Government wants to shut down all nucleair reactors • Governmentsquitsfor 2nd time in 3 years. • Future is insecure ? • => NEW PROJECT
