Phase II Vocabulary Words Acid Rain- contains a weak solution of sulfuric and nitric acid created by pollutants emitted during the burning of fossil fuels Carbon Dioxide- A gas contained in the atmosphere. It is exhaled out of all animal’s lungs. Makes up .04% of the atmosphere Marijuana- A drug which sometimes smoked in order to get high Nicotine- Poison contained in tobacco. Believed to be habit forming Oxygenated- Containing oxygen

  7. The Air Around Us 3 States of Matter are: • Solid • Liquid • Gas

  8. Air Around Us • Air is all around us. It is in water and soil. (Ex. bubbles by fish. And worms come out when heavy rain occurs) • Air takes up room. We cannot see it, but we can feel it. (Ex. Balloon) • Air contains dust and water/water vapor • Moving air helps us do work. It helps things float in water, it helps us suck up water, and it pushes against things • Wind is fast moving air. The faster it moves the greater its force • Air is colder in winter than the summer. Heated air expands and rises; cold air contracts and descends

Air Around Us • Oxygen is an important part of air.Fire needs oxygen to burn • Animals must breathe oxygen to survive • Plants use the carbon dioxide and give off oxygen • Air contains moisture (water) Warm air usually contains more moisture than cold air • Condensation of moisture in the air results in: Clouds, fog, rain, hail, snow, dew, and frost • A difference in temperature causes air to move; hot air rises and cold air descends
