Lincoln- Douglas Debates

  • Lincoln would challenge Douglas to debates between Douglas and himself in seven of nine states.

  • Defining event in American politics.

  • Began to define sharp differences between the North/South, Republican/Democratic, and Lincoln/Douglas.

  • Who would be the one that would start the withdrawing? Guesses?

  • South Carolina first on December 20, 1860.

  • Mississippi next on January 9, 1861.

    • Florida seceded the next day.

  • Within the week; Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas seceded.
