  2. Potatoes and Turnips • Paul and Himmelstoss are going back to their cabin from the front line. Now they are just loafing around and they are sent to the cookhouse to peel potatoes and turnips. Himmelstoss wants to become friends with the rest of the group because of the tragedy's they went through.

  3. Animals and Sanity • On the front line, they are acting as animals. They act like animals on the front line to keep their sanity. When they return they relax and just chill. Kimmerich is dead, Haie Westhus is dying, Martin has no legs, Myers, Max, Beyer, and Hammerling are all dead.

  4. Good Humour • The good Humour of the troops is to keep their sanity and not because of any dances that the war news is portraying back home.

  5. Quotes from Story • “Our dead comrades shall rise up and march with us again.” (140) • “ We will make ourselves comfortable and sleep, eat as much as we can stuff into our bellies, and drink and smoke so the hours are not wasted. Life is short.” (139)
