  2. Objective: • The learner will realize that certain characteristics are passed from parent to offspring

Watch the Video (what are genes?) and answer the following questions • What is contained in the nucleas? • Where are your genes found? • What is DNA? • What are do genes do? • What does it mean to say you have your father's hair? • What are chromosomes? • How many chromosomes do humans have? • Do all species have the same number of chromosomes? • How close are we to chimpanzees? (percentage)

  4. In this activity you will: • Learn about characteristics that are passed from parents to offspring • At the end of this lesson, you will be able to explain all the keywords in slide 3. • Write the keywords in a list and use your book or the internet to explain 6 of them for homework.

  7. Look around. Is anyone just like you? You and everyone else are unique. No two people are exactly alike, including identical twins. However, many of your traits are inherited. People in a family may have things in common. They can share traits. You can inherit traits from your parents. Some traits include:

  13. Heredity and Genetics Your genes determine whether or not you possess certain physical traits. Your genes make you blue eyed or brown eyed, or have brown or blond hair. These traits are highly complex, and involve the interaction of many genes.   17. Non-inherited traits Not all traits are inherited some traits you learn during your lifetime and can be influenced by the environment. These are calldnon-inherited traits. Examples include: • Ability to swim • Ability to ride a bicycle. • Spiky hair • Ear piercing • Being able to read and write.

  18. Chromosomes and Genes Chromosomes are thread like structures found in the nucleus of plant and animal cells They are made up of DNA (40%) protein (60%)

  20. Chromosomes and Genes Genes is section of DNA in a chromosome that are instructions for a trait or characteristic e.g eye colour.

  21. Chromosomes and Genes Human cells contain 46 chromosomes, 23 pairs. When a egg or a sperm cell is made 1 from each pair goes into the egg or sperm cell.

  22. Other Activities • Make a poster of your family that shows things that you have in common. You can highlight the traits that are the same. • Make a family tree that shows traits that have been passed down in your family. • Invite a hair care specialist to come in and talk about baldness, hair color, and hair texture. • Invite a professional animal breeder in to talk about different breeds. • Invite a doctor in to talk about diseases or traits that are inherited.
