Secondary Math Initiatives • High School Math • Re-aligned some course content in Algebra I, Algebra II and Geometry to better match Common Core and PARCC expectations • Looking into adding AP Statistics • Will be a Junior/Senior level elective • Will be recommended for Engineering students • A good addition or alternative to AP Calculus

Secondary Math Initiatives • Middle School Math (Grades 6-8) • Big Ideas Math • Written for the Common Core standards • A blend of discovery and traditional • Increased focus on practice • Allows teacher to differentiate their instruction much easier • Online textbook and answers in the back of the book • www.bigideasmath.com

  6. Secondary ELA Initiatives • Updated Curriculum • Model Curriculum Unit Assessments • Skills Based Assessments • Cooperative Learning • Independent Reading • Planning for 2 new AP courses in HS History

Character Education Initiatives • Our Character Education initiative is based on the book: • Lessons in Living • There is a monthly theme and each classroom in the district will have a poster with that theme on it • Teachers incorporate the theme into their classroom and their daily routines • We are working with the books author Sandy Queen who has successfully implemented this program in schools throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia
