  3. Substance Use • past month use: • 40% reported any cigarette use • 42% report bingedrinking • 20% reported any illicit drug use Sources: NSDUH, 2004

  4. Overweight & Obesity • About one fourth are overweight • About one eighth are obese Source: BRFSS, 2003

  5. Mental Health • 14% have a serious mental illness; higher among females, non-Hispanic Whites & non-college bound • 35% of those with serious mental illness received mental health treatment or counseling Sources: NSDUH, 2004

  6. Suicide • Young adult males ages 20-24 have a suicide rate over 6 times the rate for same-age females • American Indian/Alaskan Native, non-Hispanic young adults have highest suicide rates Source: NCIPC, 2004

  7. Trends Over Past Decades • Alcohol Use STDs Tobacco Use Suicide • Illicit drug Use Violence The most common diagnosis among 18- to 25-year-olds was substance use (either abuse or dependence), followed by anxiety disorders and depressive disorders.
