  1. Kreating Kinesthetic Klassrooms Using Movement to Teach 8th grade TEKS by Rita Martin and Colton Mullins Texas Middle School, Texarkana, Texas

  2. 8.8a Use models such as the Herztsprung-Russell diagram for classification

  3. Step 1: Explain Temperature and Luminosity Scales on classroom walls Klassroom HighTe High Temperatures Low Temperatures Low Luminosity High Luminosity

  4. Step 2: Give each student a colored “star”. Explain how they “plot” their star. Low Temperatures HighTemperatures Low Luminosity High Luminosity High Temperatures Low Temperatures

  5. Step 3: Have students move around to “plot” their star. Stop and tell those that are correct to stand still and then have those that are not correct to try again. Kinesthetic High Temps Low Temps Low Luminosity High Luminosity

  6. Step 4: After everyone is in place discuss temperatures and luminosities. Locate Sun. R Red Giants and Super Giants SUN (Very Bright Blue Giants Not so Hot) (Very Hot and Very Bright) Main Sequence Stars (Medium Temperatures and Brightness) White Dwarfs (Really Hot Not so Bright) HighTemperatures Low Temperatures Low Luminosity High Luminosity

  7. Plate Tectonic Shuffle 8.9B relate plate tectonics to the formation of crustal features Vocabulary--- Converge- move together Diverge- move apart Song Transform- slide past Subduct- go underneath

  8. Diverge 4 steps away from your shoulder partner

  9. Converge-- 4 steps back towards your shoulder partner

  10. Transform-- Left 2 steps forward then 2 back Right 2 steps back then 2 forward.

  11. Subduct-- Line on right hold up arm and left line goes underneath to switch places.

  12. Tectonic Shuffle Down down In the earth In the earth In the earth 4x

  13. When the plates diverge • They make new ocean floor • When the plates diverge • They make new ocean floor • When the plates transform • They cause the earth • to quake • When the plates subduct • they leave volcanoes • in their wake

  14. Got a brand new dance • Gotta move your muscle • A brand new dance • It’s called tectonic shuffle • Wegner said that the plates • Moved slow • ----We gonna show you how it goes

  15. Diverge, Diverge • Diverge, Diverge • Converge, Converge • Converge, Converge • Transform, Transform • Transform, Transform • Now subduct underneath • Subduct underneath

  27. Periodic Cake Walk 8.5C Interpret the arrangement of the Periodic Table, including groups and periods, to explain how properties are used to classify elements. • Draw this piece of the • Periodic Table out on a • concrete area using chalk. • Give each student a • whiteboard and a marker. • Play some music and have • students walk around the • outside of the drawing. Skip A Few • When the music stops have them go to a square and then ask them • questions such as How many valence electrons? Metals or non-metals?
