A Study Conducted by Richard Arum From New York University • The study of 2,322 traditional students from the year 2005 to 2009 revealed that after four years of schooling, students still lacked the ability to translate facts into new original ideas and analyze and situation for its economical, social, political, and cultural impacts on society. • Thirty-six percent of the sample of college students showed no significant gains in critical thinking

  4. Albert Einstein • “Information is not knowledge, the only source of knowledge is through experience.”

  5. The Solution • Technology is playing a bigger and more influential role in society. Born now in the digital era, the basic understanding and involvement in the technological world is as crucial as it is inevitable.

  6. New New Media • New New Media, is a website created by the digital natives and for the digital natives. • It’s the tool that will help close the gap in the classroom’s digital divide.

  7. An United Forum • The website will help Instructors and students come together and use all of the new new media resources that are available to them on one united website. • Opposed to using traditional educational tools, the students will use resources that provide for them the opportunity to interact with others and help them best illustrate their thoughts and ideas in and out of the classroom.

  8. Marshall McLuhan, 1967 • “Today’s child is bewildered when he enters the 19th Century environment that still characterizes the educational establishment where information is scarce but ordered and structured by fragmented classified patterns and subjects and schedules.”

  9. Innovative Design Director, Jonathan Skolnick • “A traditional compulsory education requires students to sit through twelve years of classes they never signed up for.”

  10. A need for a Newer Education • This is a new era of society, ruled by technology and made by the digital natives. • It is time that education and technology came together in the classroom.

  11. Professor David Willey, Birgham Young Univerity • “If Universities can’t find the will to innovate and adapt changes into the world around them, universities will be irrelevant by 2020.”

  12. NewNewMedia.com • The website will be divided into five different pages each containing a list of resources that share a common theme.

  13. Pages

  14. Contents of Each Page • A brief description of its importance in the classroom. • A screen shot picture of the website that when clicked, links to the website itself. • An example of each website used in the classroom and it’s benefits.

  15. Create • The create section of New New media supplies its instructors and students with the opportunity to take education to a new, digital platform. A gateway that is made up of urls, online sharing, and creativity. A great deal of the world wide web, is a tool that to this day remains untouched by our education system. Whether the reasons are because of the digital divide or the fear of reliability that we have on technology, still, if used in the correct manor can drastically improve the way we educate today. Creativity is key when it comes to thinking critical and truly understanding the content of a subject given to any student. Memorization can only go so far, facts do not become understanding unless the student can take what they have learned and express it in their own words.

  16. Create Continued • A students recreation of the subject and information shows not only the instructor that the student understands the material but also the student them-self. The time and effort it takes for a student to express or recreate their knowledge and understanding of a subject not only helps better educate the user, but also installs an idea of confidence and appraisal in their own work. Each website supplies its users with its own distinct design template for instructors and students to utilize. This gives the students not only the ability to learn any given subject but also the opportunity to better communicate and express their understandings in a unique way. The students are then taking the subject out of the classroom and becoming more active participants in the courses content, which helps install a better understanding.

  17. Create Continued • By using these online resources in the classroom the students are given the opportunity to learn from others. For example, it is no longer an a to b learning environment of a student handing in an assignment and then receiving a grade, the paper is also shared with his or her peers. This creates an idea of importance in the work and for their peers approval, which in hand will also push the student for better quality and credential. Through peer evaluations and critiques the students will develop a higher level of critical thinking skill by defending their opinion and justifying their views. Debate is a significant source of intellect for students. Group projects and working in teams is another useful product of these websites. This will force students to learn the benefits of teamwork which is a skill that surpasses the classroom and continues on and is essential in the work place. By taking the discussion to a place that can be carried on outside of the classroom creates an idea of a classroom community. This helps get the classroom united on any given subject, putting them all on the same level, which helps in creating a better and more successful learning environment. It also gives the student who wouldn’t normally voice an opinion in class to speak up. Its the knowledge and understanding of these online tools that students don’t just leave in the classroom or write on a flash card. Its a tool that can be carried on with them in the real world and the work place. Students are no longer just learning and reading, they are learning, understanding and recreating which provides a gateway for better critical thinking skills.

  18. Create: Wikis • Provides its users the capability to work together in a collaborative environment. Students learn basic team working skills along with the importance of credibility in ones work. Best said by Susan Kinze of the Washington Post, “Wikis are proactive, inspiring, funny and addictive. Some course sites read like journals, some like debates and some shimmy in and out of topics with music photos, and video pulling readers along. Wikis an give professors a better sense of student understanding and interest and keep students writing, thinking, and questioning.”

  19. Create: Blogs • Its easy to use technology provides students the capability of simple communication. Blogs help motivate students who wouldn’t normally speak up in class to voice an opinion on a subject. This new equal learning ground provides a creative way for students to express their understanding of a subject in a technological text. It creates a new forum for students to collaborate and discuss. In blogging, each post is archived and presents each student with his or her own portfolio. This comes in handy for instructor to student conferencing. They are given the ability to look back at the students work and discuss the progress that has been made in the class. Blogs are also a gateway for students to carry their learning outside of the classroom and into their homes and express their knowledge and opinions in a creative and unique environment.

  20. Create: Prezi • Prezi the newest form of powerpoint presentation. Through its motion and unique design template, its user helps captivates its audience and better express the message of their presentation. This tool will help students learn a new way of presentation are creativity in sharing their knowledge and understanding of a subject. It is also a helpful tool that can be carried on with them in the real world and the work place. “Prezi is described as a tool that can create visually interesting presentations and could take the place of power-point and keynote.
