Reencontro • REENCONTRO, is a Mozambican non-profit organization whose mission is to contribute towards alleviating the plight of HIV/AIDS by reducing the negative impact made by broken family structures • An Association for Support and Development of Orphaned Children whose parents have died from HIV/AIDS • Reencontro uses strategies such as the promotion of better conditions of socio-economic-psychosocial, good health practice and education to provide better overall living conditions for children who have lost one or both parental figures • Reencontro assists approx 7,000 orphan children

Reencontro • Historical Context: • Maternal orphans in 2004 was 824,860 of which 227,830 (or 28%) were due to AIDS • In 2010, projections indicate that there will be 1,069,710 maternal orphans, of whom 518,270 will be due to AIDS (48%) • AIDS related deaths in 2003 was estimated at 84,388, of which 19,420 were children below 15 years • Most of the deaths recorded among children occurred among under 5 years old (16,187, or 83%) • The increasing number of AIDS deaths leaves more children orphaned each year creating an orphan crisis beyond the coping capacities of families and communities

Reencontro • Activities to be implemented by the AMF: • To integrate orphaned children into substitute families; • To support caregivers on children feeding, school fees, uniform, school materials and medical aid etc; • To ensure that all children are enrolled in school; • To carry out with home visits and community based care; • To provide children with professional skills development; • To motivate them with initiatives of small income generation development in order to empower them economically; • To register for citizenship children who do not have identity documentation and to protect and defend their rights • Promote debate among the youth on reproductive health and sexual diseases including HIV and AIDS; • Provide moral education and scripture union to the orphans.

  5. Reencontro • The pictures in this slide show are snapshots in the lives of the children in Mozambique who have been orphaned by AIDS. • Every child in the slide show is an orphan and in need of immediate help!
