  3. NY MFO/COVERTS Volunteer Program Goal: To provide NY State forest owners with the information and encouragement necessary to manage their forests to improve ownership satisfaction

  4. Methods • Train and support a corps of certified volunteers who work within their communities to promote forest stewardship by: • Conducting on-site, 1/2-day visits with neighbor forest owners • Collaborating with agencies and organizations in various educational events • Preparing articles for various media outlets

  7. Annual New Volunteers Training at Cornell’s Arnot Forest

  8. New Volunteer Training Workshops Location: Cornell University’s Arnot Teaching and Research Forest, VanEtten, NY and the Hudson River Valley Timing: Four-day training (Wednesday evening through Sunday noon) in mid-September (Arnot) and spring (Hudson) Format:Morning lectures, afternoon field trips, evening discussion groups/guest presentations Content: Education skills, natural resources of NYS, tree identification, wildlife management, forest soils, sawtimber economics, boundary location, sawmill visit, agroforestry, forest ecology, silviculture Instructors: MFO volunteers, DEC foresters/biologists, CU faculty, private consultant foresters

  15. MFO Annual Report Summary(Average Documented) • Neighbor On-site Visits: • 50 volunteers responded (33% of vol’s.): • 150 forest owner visits; total of 9,000 acres • Additional Outreach: • 35 MFO volunteers reported: • 300 outreach activities; total audience of 8,000
