  3. Purpose of References • Used for: • Direct quotes • Paraphrased material • Any other info taken from any source • Everything but your own primary research • Give credit to originator of material • Avoid plagiarism • Provide support to your argument/theme

  4. Parenthetical Reference (MLA) • Points the reader to Works Cited listing • Examples • “Memory is required in order for a system to work” (Andrews, 193). • Chocolate used in chocolate chips is made from cocoa, cocoa butter, and sugar (“Chocolate Glossary”).
