Some statistics - Facebook • More than 500 million active users globally • 50% of active users log on to Facebook every day • Average user has 130 friends • People spend over 700 billion minutes per month on Facebook • There are more than 200 million active users currently accessing Facebook through their mobile devices. • People that use Facebook on their mobile devices are twice as active on Facebook than non-mobile users.

Statistics - Twitter • Twitter now has 105,779,710 registered users. • New users are signing up at the rate of 300,000 per day. • 180 million unique visitors come to the site every month. • 75% of Twitter traffic comes from outside Twitter.com (i.e. via third party applications.) • Twitter users are, in total, tweeting an average of 55 million tweets a day. • Of Twitter's active users, 37 percent use their phone to tweet.

YouTube • On April 23, 2005 the first ever video was uploaded onto youtube • On December 2005 official launch (8 million videos watched a day) • In July, 2006 100 million views per day, 65,000 video uploads per day • In October, 2006 Google acquired YouTube for 1,65 billion USD • In October 2009 more than 1 billion views a day • In March 2010 24 hours of video uploaded per minute • In May 2010 over 2 billion views a day

MORE YouTube statistics • The average person spends 15 minutes on YouTube every day • More video is uploaded onto YouTube in 60 days than all three major US networks created in 60 years • YouTube is localised in 22 countries and in 24 different languages • Over 7000 full-length movies and shows • 70% of YouTube’s traffic comes from outside the US

  10. Using Twitter for research • Following people / being followed • Tweeting • Re-tweeting and mentions • Using hashtags • Tweetdeck (access to facebook and other social networks) • When big news break, you can follow the latest comments on Twitter and add your own comments (using the hashtag)

  11. Stumbleupon, digg and delicious • Stumbleupon.com = Discover photos, videos, and web pages recommended by friends and people sharing your interests. StumbleUpon learns what you like, so you only see what's interesting to you from across the web. • Digg.com = basically it’s about liking something, i.e ‘digging it’, a bit like bookmarking • Delicious.com = an online bookmarking tool where you can share your bookmarks with others, create networks and save others’ bookmarks

Tasks in class • Find out what the most watched video on youtube is and how many views it has had to date • Find out whenfacebookwas created and by whom • Create an event page or a like-page of your choice on facebook, promote it and invite people to join • Find at least 1 viral video and share it on your social networks • Link two of your social networks together (such as linked in, twitter, facebook, digg, wordpressetc) • Open up a digg or a delicious account and save at least 10 new bookmarks • Go to your blog, make a new post and enter the answers to above questions here, then publish to the world!
