  2. I worry our focus on “data collection” may not capture the big picture.

  3. College-and-Career Readiness Standards & Indicators

  4. We are preparing our students to solve problems that do not yet exist. Is it the responsibility of the math teacher to prove the relevancy of school mathematics? Or is it the student’s job to find opportunities to use mathematics as vocabulary to describe the world? Either way: The teacher sets the task.

  5. The Pizza Problem Source: 2013 MATHCOUNTS State Competition, Team Round, Problem 2

  6. The Pizza Problem

  7. Geogebra? Desmos? How about BOTH. • Draw a diagram using Geogebra. • Draw a diagram using Desmos. • Justify your claims with evidence from both. Problem Source: Patrick Janike, Lincoln High School, Lincoln, NE, pjanike@lps.org

  24. Transferring Mathematical Authority Always Never “We” “I” “AN answer” “THE answer” Students won’t be paid to solve problems with answers in the back of a book. We must prepare our students for jobs that do not yet exist. One can never bench 300 lbs. by only lifting 100 lbs. Problems prove their worth by hitting back!

  25. Suggested Next Steps: Become a member of NATM(Nebraska Association of Teachers of Mathematics)http://www.natmonline.org/ Accept the invitation to the Dropbox folder for sharing files from today’s presenters and participants Participate in #noycechat next Sunday night, 7-8 pm CST
