  4. Big Picture You will use the text books, powerpoints and your prior knowledge to learn about the short-term and long term effects of exercise on the respiratory system.

  5. Learning Outcomes All students will be able to identify three short-term effects of exercise on the respiratory system. All students will be able to identify two long-term effects of regular exercise on the respiratory system. Most students will be able to explain the effects of regular exercise on the respiratory system. All students will be able to identify the effects of lifestyle on the respiratory system.

Immediate and Short Term Effects of Exercise on the Respiratory System • Push the chairs in to make room. • Students jog on the spot for several minutes. • Can you identify the 3 short term effects of exercise on the respiratory system? • Breathing becomes faster • Breathing becomes deeper • Oxygen debt

  8. Immediate and Long Term Effects of Exercise on the Respiratory System • Students read through page 133 and identify key information. Take short notes. • Lungs become more efficient. • Increased delivery of O2 to working muscles. • Body copes better with exercise. • CO2 removed more efficiently. • Body can cope with increased production of CO2. • Vital Capacity is increased. • Respiratory system becomes more efficient. • More alveoli available for gaseous exchange. • More O2 can be absorbed and CO2 removed. • VO2 Max is increased. • Increased number of capillaries around the alveoli. • More O2 can get into the blood and to the muscles.
