Short history of the cinema

Fuzia Ana Gabriela

Clasa a XII-a A

Grupul Scolar “Tudor Vladimirescu” - Simian

The cinema was invented by the Lumiere brothers in 1895.

At first the movies were silent, with live piano music as soundtrack.

People enjoyed this new way of entertainment.

  • Soon the first film studios appeared.

  • And a series of great actors just began to be born.

  • Remember the comedians Oliver Hardy and Stanley Laurel,

The beautiful Veronica Lake

  • Or the immortal Charlie Chaplin,

    here in the famous

    scene in the Gold

Rush, where he is eating his boot, made of licorice.

  • At the late ’20s the Golden Age of Hollywood was at its beginning.

  • Famous actors, myths, sacred monsters of the cinema began to shine while the sound film was invented.

  • We just called them STARS.

  • Greta Garbo

  • Marilyn Monroe

  • Liz Taylor

  • Vivien Leigh

    and

  • Clark Gable

    (In Gone

    with the Wind)

  • Bette Davis

  • Marlene Dietrich

  • Then, Hollywood began to reach its dawn, for a while. No more stars, no more famous films, no more glamour.

  • In the ’70’s the detective movies and the sci-fi productions revived the film industry at Hollywood.

  • It’s time for James Bond,

  • and for space sagas

  • Nowadays fantasy dominates the box office as well as sci-fi.

  • In Europe, some non American figures entertained the youth of our parents.

    Brigitte Bardot

  • It was hard to break the American domination, but not impossible.

  • Today the film industry lives another decade of fall. Soap operas are at fashion, until the movie will revive again.
