  1. Session 3 – InjectionCONSIDERATIONS FOR 2012 Alick Macpherson Malika Meddahi Speakers: LeneDrosdal Wolfgang Bartmann Karel Cornelis Chiara Bracco

  2. Beam preparation in the injectors- Considerations for 2012 • Produce a list of nominal beam parameters in the injector chain and sick to it for regular physics operation; • Immediate gain: intelligent use of SPS scraping and no more stretched beam parameter requests • Decide on the SPS super cycle composition when filling LHC and stick to it: • 1 (or 2?) CNGS cycle(s) + LHC cycle (27 s to 33s cycle) – advantage: less time spent at LHC flat bottom (reduce emittance blow up) while compromising ZS sparks with high intensity • Accept the drawback : take FT cycle out so impact on PS users; • Agree on the strategy: Pilot - then steering of TL with12b – then 4x36b checks in the SPS (15’) – then filling for physics with NO more changes in PSB and PS. • To note: • improvement: no more sequence changes in the SPS injectors (from 12b to 36b)! • ZS limitations - maybe need more resources on 2012 investigations

  3. Injection -Considerations for 2012 CONTINUE • Studies on TL stability (Lene + Verena) for fewer TL beam steering Give early SPS beam time for MSE4/6 and MKE4 (G. Le Godec + ABT) • Improving tools • IQC - trajectory at collimators, envelopes for monitors and correctors, intensity dependent and thus easy colour code • Transverse diagnostics in the injector chain • Mitigation and cure campaigns concerning beam losses and protection (shielding, BLM sunglasses, moving/adding TCDIs) • Dedicated beam time for injection and beam dump systems w/wo beam to properly test components (new electronics, SW, FW....) and set up (collimators, IQC references for steering...) • Respect safety instructions (Experiments off during injection, MKI vacuum and temperature interlocks)

  4. Injection - summary • Beam preparation in the injectors – agree on beam parameters and strategy …. and document them • Beam transfer and injection • Reducing the beam losses : Tracking the culprits of the instability observed and curing the problems; • Protection against beam losses and potential damages: Mitigation and new measures being put in places; • All in place to not reproduce the problems encountered with the HW and SW during 2011 • Beam time needed as soon as the machine restart to re-commission and set-up the injection and beam dump systems.
