Jessica Belcher – Sterling Heights High School Natalie Steflja – Sterling Heights High School The Relationship Between Economics and Food Consumption
Overview • Introduction • Problem Statement • Map – Royal Oak • Procedures • Data Analysis • Conclusion • Further Research • Future Improvements • Difficulties
Introduction • The obesity rate of America has grown • The economic stability America has decreased • Does economy have and effect on obesity? http://madisonweeklynews.com/childhood-obesity-a-growing-problem/
Calorie Intake • A measurement of the amount of energy derived from food • Amount consumed varies between sex, age, height, and body type
McDonalds • Unhealthy food • Low priced meals • High calorie amount in food • Big Mac-560 calories • Large French Fry-570 calories • Large Coke-310 calories • Total-1,440 calories • $5.69 • McDonalds in Royal Oak was chosen
The Inn Season • Healthy meals • Low calorie amount in food • Expensive meals • Chosen because this is a vegan café • Located in Royal Oak
Purpose • To determine if there is a relationship between economic status and calorie intake • Possibly find a way to help people eat healthier for lower prices
Problem Statement To determine if there is a significant relationship between economic status (income) versus food consumption.
Hypothesis • % of annual income spent at vegan restaurant is higher than McDonalds • The body types at McDonalds would be more overweight than consumers at the Inn Season. • Overall, Income affects amount of calories.
Survey • What is your occupation and position title? • How many years have you worked there? • How many members are in your family? • How many times a month do you come to this restaurant? • What did you order/ what is your usual order?
Body Type • Height/ Weight • BMI • Body Type () • Under weight < 18.5 • Normal 18.5 – 24.99 • Overweight 25 - 29.9 • Obese > 30 http://www.freebmicalculator.net/bmi-chart.jpg
Percentage Spent From Annual Yearly Income .11 .06 .235 .6 .01 .67 .53 1.2 .01 .44 .315 1.005 .19 2.77 4.4 2.16 2.23 3.96 .02 Percentage of Income
Body Type 3 3 2 1 4 2 2.5 3 4 1 Body Type
Two Sample t-test(Annual Income) • Null and Alternative Hypotheses: • Ho: µ1=µ2 • Ha:µ1≠µ2.
Two Sample t-test(Body Type) • Null and Alternative Hypotheses: • Ho: µ1=µ2 • Ha:µ1≠µ2.
Conclusion (Income) • Accept hypothesis. • P-value = 0.000 • Statistical difference between two restaurants.
Conclusion (Body Type) • Hypothesis rejected • P-value = 4.73 • No statistical difference between two restaurants.
Conclusion • Effect of income does have relationship on calorie intake. • Two 2 sample t-tests conducted. • Percentage of annual income spent on either McDonalds or the vegan café. • Body types of the customers surveyed at McDonalds or the vegan café.
Recap • Overall hypothesis accepted. • Income does have effect on calorie intake. • No significant body types at different restaurants.
Future Improvements • Warmer conditions • Finding more out about the consumer being surveyed • Employment of spouse • Where else they may eat • Possible exercise habits.
Difficulties • Rude • Cold weather • Un-finished surveys • Not anonymous
Further Research • Survey more restaurants or food stores. • Leave cards with surveys in restaurants.
