  3. What is a Machine? • Machine: allows you to do work in a way that is easier • Ei. A shovel makes work easier, therefor it is a machine

  4. How to Make it Easier? • Machines will make work easier by 1 of 3 factors 1) change the amount of force you exert 2) change the direction you exert the force 3) change the distance over which you exert the force

  5. Input and Output Forces • The force you exert on a machine is called the input force • This moves the machine a certain distance called an input distance • The machine does work by exerting a force over another distance, called the output distance • The force a machine exerts on an object is called an output force

  6. Some quick Math • Remember Work = Force x Distance • Input force x Input distance = Input Work • Output force x Output distance = Output Work The amount of output work can never be greater than the amount of input work

  7. Changing Force • In some machines the output force is greater then the input force • Remember Work = force x distance • If work was the same, a decrease in force mean an increase in distance

  8. Changing Distance • In some machines output force is less than input force • If work is the same, a smaller distance requires a greater force

  9. Changing Direction • Work, force, and distance is the same in these machines, we just change the direction the force is exerted • Pulleys, it is easier to pull down than lift up
