  1. Welcome to Forty Hall

  2. Royal Enfield

  3. In this area were the royal hunting grounds of Enfield Chase. Royalty would have come to hunt in this area.

  4. Who was the house built for? This house was built in 1632 for Sir Nicholas Rainton. He was born in 1569.

  5. He was born in 1569, when Queen Elizabeth I was queen. He lived through 34 years of Queen Elizabeth’s reign.

  6. He lived through 22 years of King James I’s reign

  7. He lived through 21 years of King Charles I.

  8. Sir Nicholas died in 1646. He is buried in a magnificent tomb in St Andrew’s Church in the market place in Enfield Town. How old was he when he died? 1569 to 1646

  9. What sort of person was he? Sir Nicholas was a wealthy merchant. He held important positions during his lifetime that you can find out about as you look around the house today.

  10. Why did Sir Nicholas choose Enfield? He had a home in Lombard Street in London where his business was based. It’s hard to imagine now but this was his country home. It was far enough out of London to ride to without changing horses.

  11. Why did Sir Nicholas choose Enfield? Why do you think Sir Nicholas might have wanted a house in the country away from London in the 17th Century?

  12. Sir Nicholas entertained people here. His house needed to be impressive to show how successful he was.

  13. The more important you were as a guest or the closer family you were, the further you’d be invited into the house. Important guests might even have been entertained in the bedroom!

  14. Different owners have altered Forty Hall over their year to put their mark on it. For example, the fancy entrance hall with Rococo plasterwork was added in the 18th century. The window style of the Hall was altered, extensions added and the layouts of the rooms changed over the years. Even the staircase was turned the other way round at one time!

  15. The Hall was bought by Enfield Council in 1951 and became a museum.

  16. In 2012 the Hall was refurbished. We kept the important features from all of the different time periods that this house has lived through. The layout of the house was brought back to the 17th century design.

  17. The house now belongs to everyone; whenever we’re open you and your family are welcome to come inside and visit!
