  1. Tuesday, March 18th Pen/Pencil Notebook/Loose-leaf paper Highlighter Textual citation warm-up handout

  2. Objective Evaluate available evidence for thoroughness and relevance based on the topic you selected for your summative essay in order to select and cite two outside sources. SWBAT appropriately assemble a piece of textual evidence into a paragraph using their notes from the previous lesson.

  3. Common Mistakes to Avoid • You must fluidly incorporate a quote into your paragraph! • Ex: In the short story Nightlife, by Rob Thurman, the older brother is described mainly through the narrator’s actions and words. The narrator says, “I guess you have the balls after all. Good for you big brother” (pg #). • Ex: The relatives in the story have a love/hate relationship: “He had actually done it . . .” (paragraph 2) • An expansion is not a restatement of the argument/answer • After the older brother stabbed his brother, he didn’t flee the scene. Instead, he chose to try and get his brother to safety. This shows that he loves his sibling, but was unintentionally forced to act the way he did.

  4. Textual Citation Review Based on your knowledge of your text thus far, select one character who you believe acts like an individual. Find a piece of textual evidence that supports your argument that the character is an individual. Write a paragraph that accurately cites the quote ***Remember the Big 4***

  5. Computer Lab You have two choices today: 1.) You can use the time in the computer lab to select two outside sources to incorporate in your essay. You can then read to pg. 175 (Gatsby) or pg. 170 (Their Eyes) for homework 2.) You can use this time to first read to pg. 175 (Gatsby) or pg. 170 (Their Eyes) and then search the internet for your two outside sources.

  6. Exit Make sure to follow the directions and complete your selected worksheet for the day. The handout is due at the beginning of next class; it will count as a formative class participation grade!
