  2. What is a fraction? • A fraction represents a part of a whole or part of a set. • Example: The pizza slice is one part of the whole pizza.

  3. Fractions • There are two numbers in a fraction. 1 2 The top number is called the numerator. The bottom number is called the denominator. TIP: The Denominator is Downstairs

  4. Fractions • The numerator tells how many parts of the whole or set you have. • The denominator tells how many parts the whole or set is divided into. 1 2

  5. Example • The circle is divided into 4 equal parts, or fourths. • Each part is one-fourth of the whole circle - one part out of four parts in all. • Two parts out of four parts would be… Two-fourths or one half 1 4 1 2

  6. Example • Each part is one half of the whole window - one part out of two parts in all. • Two parts out of two parts would be… One whole or 2/2 or 1 • The window is divided into 2 equal parts, or halves. 1/2

  7. Part of a whole Numerator – tells how many parts of the whole you have Fractions Denominator –how many parts the whole is divided into Top number is the numerator Bottom number is the denominator

  8. Practice... • What fraction of the pizza has pepperoni on it? • Hint: How many slices have pepperoni on them? 3 • Hint: How many slices are there in all? 4 • What fraction of the pizza has pepperoni on it? • ¾ (three-fourths) That’s correct! Play Let’s play a game!
