  1. ViHAP3D Project PresentationVirtual Heritage: High Quality 3D Acquisition and Presentation Project No: IST-2001-32641 Thematic Priorities: IST-2001-3.1.3 Project Officer: Jan Hoorens

  2. Motivation

  3. Goals • The ViHAP3D project aims at • preserving, • presenting, • accessing and • promoting • cultural heritage by means of interactive • high-quality 3D graphics.

  4. Scanning Pipeline • 3D acquisition virtual reality post-processing

  5. Objectives • The ViHAP3D project addresses • 3D scanning for the acquisition of accurate and visually rich 3D models, • post-processing, data representation, and efficient rendering for the detailed interactive display and inspection of such models even on low cost platforms • virtual heritage tools for the presentation and navigation in high-quality digital model collections

  6. 3D Scanning • 3D scanner texture acquisition

  7. 3D Scanning • ViHAP3D will bring advances in • accurate 3D geometry and color acquisition hardware • Integrated reconstruction of texture and advanced surface attributes • integrated acquisition planning software for user guidance • new algorithms and methodologies for scanning of mirroring and highly specular surfaces

  8. Post-Processing • 3D model obtained from multiple scans

  9. Post-Processing Data simplification allows for fast transmission and interactive rendering on arbitrary hardware

  10. Post-Processing Data RepresentationEfficient Rendering • Innovations are expected in • range map merging • data simplification • multi-resolution representation of 3D models • transmission of 3D models • interactive rendering considering geometry, color and advanced surface properties

  11. Virtual Reality

  12. Virtual Heritage Tools • ViHAP3D will develop the following tools: • Virtual Museum Builder • on-the-fly setup of a virtual museum • arrangement of digital works of art in a virtual space • allows for definition of “virtual guides” • Virtual Museum Browser • interactive navigation for exploring virtual museums • use of different VR hardware platforms • Virtual Inspector • visualization of a single artefact with outstanding realism • can be used as a scientific instrument

  13. Workpackages • WP1 - Project Management • WP2 - Functional Specification • WP3 - 3D Scanning • WP4 - Post-Processing, Data Representation Efficient Rendering • WP5 - Virtual Heritage Tools • WP6 - Assessment of Acquisition and Presentation • WP7 - Information Dissemination and Take-up of Results
