  1. Advanced Qualification Program - AQP Personal Historical Perspective Jack Mitchard

  2. Quality over Quantity

  3. “That’s not the way we’ve always done it”

  4. “Fly like you train… Train like you fly….”

  5. FAR Part 121 Initial Training: Ground School & Oral Sim Training & PC Initial Operating Experience (IOE)

  6. Advanced Check Airman Training (ACAT)

  7. “That’s not the way we’ve always done it”

  8. AQP Initial (Qualification) Training • Ground School: Systems & Procedures • Systems & Procedures Validation (Oral) • Sim Maneuvers Training (4 sims) • Maneuvers validation • Line Oriented Training (4 sims) • Evaluation (LOE) • IOE (Line Training)

  9. Recurrent Training Comparison

  10. “That’s not the way we’ve always done it”

  11. AQP Small Group Tryout B737

  12. Hub & Spoke LOE PHX BOS CLT PIT PHL HAR DCA (COMPLEX LEGS) (SIMPLEX LEGS)

  13. Line Operational Evaluation-LOE Allows evaluation of normal procedures such as: Flows, Checklist usage, Performance, Altitude awareness, Runway incursion awareness, Corporate policy, Briefings, Radio discipline, Sterile cockpit,Descent planning and energy management and Situational awareness. Crews learn to recognize and control the task loading. Crews are evaluated in the environment they fly in every day. No instruction or intervention is allowed by check pilot. Crews learn through experience of the event and brought together in debrief. Allows evaluation of threat situations by increasing task loading in the following scenarios: Aircraft system non-normal emergencies, Distractions, Passenger issues, Weather issues, ATC revised clearances and re-routes, Runway changes / incursions, Maintenance issues / MEL’s. Allows evaluation of PF / PM role assignment and duties & crew communication. Crews invited to use all their resources. Relevant. Crews invited to help each other (trap errors) and resolve issues.Repeats: 2 Event Sets can be repeated. Crew training. Standardized. Gate to gate. Debrief value. Scripted.

  14. LOE- What is it? • “Big Picture”, the whole ‘enchilada’ • Simulated line flight conducted in real time, “gate to gate” • Used for Qualification and Continuing Qual LOE • Lesson is scripted, thus standardized • Like a line check where the check pilot has control of the threats • Evaluated and graded in phase of flight “Event Sets” Taxi, Takeoff, Climb, etc. • Repeats: 2 Event Sets can be repeated.

  15. LOE- Benefits • Crews are evaluated in the environment they fly in every day. • Crews learn to recognize and control task loading. • No instruction or intervention is allowed by check pilot. • Crews learn through experience of an event. • Crews invited to use all their resources. • Crews invited to help each other (trap errors) and resolve issues.

  16. LOE- Benefits • Allows evaluation of normal procedures such as • Flows • Checklist usage • Altitude awareness • Runway incursion awareness • Corporate policy • Briefings • Radio discipline • Descent planning and energy management • Situational awareness

  17. LOE- Benefits • Allows evaluation of threat situations by increasing task loading • Aircraft system non-normal emergencies • Distractions • Passenger issues • Weather issues • ATC revised clearances and re-routes • Runway changes/ incursions • Maintenance issues /MEL

  18. AQP: Crew Perceptions: • Very positive • Liked how fair & relevant it was • 1 year cycle no major problems • Bust rate lowered- trap problems on Maneuvers Observation day • Crews liked not having “15 lbs in a 10 lb bag” • Crews liked maneuvers being presented in more of a training environment • Learning by experience during LOE means retaining knowledge

  19. Bottom Line: What’s the goal of a line-oriented training program that can be adaptive to the needs and threats of the kind of flying you do? • Safer • More standardized • More prepared to do the job • Quality over quantity Finally, now you can say…..

  20. “Fly like you train… Train like you fly….”
