  1. US History Bellwork – Copy down the following definition… • Mercantilism: the colony exists for the good of the mother country – the mother country takes things of value (gold or goods) and sells the colony manufactured goods. • Simple example: countries loved to go out around the world and set up little campsites called colonies. They did this because they liked a lot of the stuff that was there. They really liked to put campers or colonists into those areas to clear the land and farm useful things for them like cotton, timber, or tobacco. In short, it's when a big country goes out around the world and sets up little colonies to make money off of them.

US History Bellwork – Copy down the following definitions… • Mercantilism - A country becomes strong by • a) possessing colonies and • b) controlling the trade of those colonies. • c) The colonies only exist to benefit the "mother" country. • Export - stuff a country sells to other places • Import - stuff a country buys from other places • A country should export finished products and import raw materials. Finished products are worth more than raw materials.

Today’s Activity – Causes of American Imperialism • Objective: 7.1.1 Identify causes of American imperialism . • Procedure: • Define the term Imperialism • Use your textbook (pages 250 – 252) to complete the chart. • You are to identify the three main causes of American Imperialism and explain each cause. (we will do the first one together and review your answers of the last two when you are done) • Remember to use your own words to paraphrase the supporting details. • I will be distributing CPS clickers for our closing assessment while you are working on causes 2 & 3.

  6. Closure… • I will project 4 questions concerning the causes of US Imperialism (SPI 7.1.1) on the board. • Enter your answers using your CPS clickers only. • Reminder: Don’t forget that you should be working on your outline for chapter 8. There is no official due date but you should have Chapters 8 – 11 done before December 1. Don’t get behind! Anytime you finish work early in class you should be working on an outline.
