The first steps Johann Matthäus Voith started as repair mechanic, initially with five employees, servicing paper mills in southern Germany. 1867January 1st is the official day of the formation of J.M.   4. Internationalization and growth • 1903 Founding of J.M. Voith in St. Pölten, Austria. • 1903 First Voith Francis turbine for Niagara Falls. • 1913 Voith supports Viktor Kaplan in the development of the Kaplan turbine, with testing in the “Brunnenmühle“. • 1927 Voith grants S. Milestones 1873 First Voith hydraulic turbine. 1903 First Pelton turbine. 1912 Niagara Falls, Canada: Voith twin Francis turbines with a rating of 12 MW – the largest at the time. 1934 Pedreira, Brazil: First reversible pump-turbine in the world with an output of 5.3 MW. 1938 Sungari, China: The worldwide first 100 MVA generators. 1964 Roenkhausen, Germany: First reversible motor and generator unit in a German pumped storage station. 1969 El Chocon, Argentina: First generator with a stator bore diameter of 16 m. 1970 Raccoon, USA: Largest pumped storage machines in the world at the time, with four 425 MVA units and directly water-cooled stator and rotor. Itaipu Itaipu Milestones 1974 Grand Coulee III, USA: The world’s largest and most powerful Francis turbines, with a runner diameter of 9.1 m for an output of 716 MW. 1976 Bath County, USA: The world’s most powerful pump turbines with an output of 458 MW. 1978 Itaipu, Brazil/Paraguay: Complete mechanical design for the world’s most powerful hydroelectric plant (13,300 MW). 1988 Yacyretá, Argentina: The largest and most powerful Kaplan turbines in the Western world rated at 154 MW and featuring a runner diameter of 9.5 m. 4019e Presentation | YYYY-MM-DD | 8

Milestones 1992 Grand Coulee, USA: New water- cooled stators for the largest hydro- electric generator in the world rated at 826 MVA per unit (diameter: 23 m). 1995 First “fish-friendly“ turbine design in the hydro power industry. 1997 Three Gorges, China: Participation in the supply of turbines, generators and electrical equipment for the most powerful hydropower plant in the world currently under construction. 1998 Variable-speed pump turbine tech- nology for Goldisthal. 2000 Guangzhou II, China: Commissioning of the world’s largest pumped storage plant (2,400 MW output). Milestones 2002 Tai´an, China: the pumped storage plant has a total output of 1,000 MW and is a major contract in the Asian market. 2003 Omkareshwar, India: supply of eight Francis turbines and generators. This hydropower station is one of the largest in India with a total output of 520 MW. 2003 Longtan, China: supply of five of the seven Francis turbines. With a total output of 4,900 MW it is among the world´s largest hydro power plants. 2004 Laxiwa, China: award for supplying five 711 MW Francis turbines for the biggest hydro project along the Yellow River with over 3 GW capacity. 4911e Presentation | YYYY-MM-DD | 10

Milestones 2004 Kops II, Austria: Three sets of three-stage storage pumps with a rated output of 450 MW – one of the most important pumped- storage plants in Europe. 2004 Goldisthal, Germany: the first variable-speed unit out of a total of four turbines in the most modern European pumped storage plant was going in commercial operation. 2005 Gilgel Gibe II, Ethiopia: award for supplying four 105 MW vertical Pelton turbines and four generators, rated at 125 MVA per unit. 2005 Xiaowan, China: Award for supplying six 714 MW Francis turbines in a consortium. 4043e Presentation | YYYY-MM-DD | 11

Milestones 2006 Caojie, China: Supply of four vertical Kaplan turbines, each with an output of 128 MW and a runner diameter of 9.5 m. 2006 Limberg II, Austria: Pump-turbines for a further new pumped storage plant with a total output of 480 MW. 2006 Rheinfelden, Germany: with four Kaplan bulb turbines (total output of 100 MW) and related generators, the largest investment in renewable energies in Germany. 2007 Jingping II, China: the largest-ever order for Voith Siemens Hydro Shanghai; eight Francis turbines, each rated at 600 MW. 2008 Ohio River, USA: largest order for Voith Siemens Hydro York: supply of the complete electro-mechanical equipment for three run-of-the-river hydroelectric plants.
