  4. Early Computational Devices • Abacus-invented by the Chinese around 2600 B.C., it is the oldest known calculating device in history.

  5. Early Computers • ENIAC- electronic numerical integrator computer, considered to be the digital computer that was built in the 1940’s in the USA. • Mark1-invented by Howard Aiken and Grace Hopper. • EDSAC-Second practical store-program computer. • EDVAC-early electronic computer. • UNIVAC-early models were vacuum tubes.

  6. Generations and Main Components • First generation-vacuum tubes • Second generation-transistor • Third generation-keypads and monitors • Fourth generation-microprocessor • Fifth generation-artificial intelligence

  7. Inventors/Developers • Steve Jobs-invented Apple 111, USB mouse, ipod, iMac G4, glass staircase, and ipad. • Steven Wozniak-helped create the Apple computer company with Steve Jobs in 1976 • Bill Gates-founded Microsoft in 1985 • Time Berners Lee- created the World Wide Web

Inventors/Developers • Marc Andreesen-co-founder and VP of Technology of Netscape Communications Corporation • Charles Babbage-invented the difference engine and the analytical engine • Herman Hollerith-invented computer punch cards • Blaise Pascal-a french mathematician, physicist, inventor, writer, and catholic philosopher

  9. Inventors/Developers • John Von Neuman-Hungarian mathematician • Eckert and Mauchly-Developed ENIAC • Paul Allen-co founded Microsoft • Formation of Microsoft-was formed in 1983 • Formation of Apple Computer, Inc- was formed in 1977

  10. Internet • Birth of the Net-started in 1957 when Sputnik was launched by the Soviet Union • First Browser-first widely used browser was Mosaic • ARPANET-first wide area packet switching network
