  • Two attempts were made at starting a colony on Roanoke

    • 1585 – settlers returned

    • 1587 – the settler

      mysteriously disappear

  • The colony was founded and financed by the Virginia Company of

    London

  • There were 144

    original settlers

    • Near disaster

    • It was mostly populated by men

    • Settlers spent their time searching for gold and silver

    • Settlers did not plant crops

    • The next winter more than one-third of the colonists died
