  3. Why are you here? • Hierarchy of Goods / What do you want out of life? • Is “holiness” on the list? • “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness” • “Depart from me Lord for I am a sinner” (Luke 5)

  4. Holiness & the Catechism • Most basic about what Christian life is about; what love is. • Any sacrament (e.g., Confirmation): about spirit of holiness. • (CCC 2013): There is a general Christian call to holiness; not just for priests or nuns. • (CCC 2015): holiness requires “battle”; “renunciation.”

  5. Do we really care about holiness? • Can you be holy in high school? • Can you be holy at PAS? • Please think about that; examination of conscience • “One sadness, not to be a saint” (Leon Bloy) • Images of “holiness?: • “Holy Roller” / “Goody-two-shoes” / • “Brown-noser” / “Jesus-freak”

  6. The holiness of God • (Leviticus 11:44): “For I, the LORD, am your God. You shall make and keep yourselves holy, because I am holy.” • The name of God; YHWH – “I am who am” (CCC 208-9) • Hebrew: qadosh / set apart; other; beyond • Created in His image: “Who are we?”

  7. Expressions of “holiness” • Creed: “Four marks of the church”: • “One, holy, catholic, apostolic” – you are the church. • Choice of a saint’s name – aspiration of holiness. • The Seventh Day: sabbath, sanctified. • Holy people? (Mother Teresa); (Dorothy Day)
